Kalyi Jag was a Hungarian Gypsy music group that was active during the 80s and the 90s. They have given concerts all over the world and they were highly appreciated for the authenticity of their music. They among the last ambassadors of the rich and little known music tradition, that of the authentic Roma music of Hungary.
Their music has nothing to do with the gypsy music played in restaurants, or with the kitsch that is all over now in Eastern Europe, their music is the traditional Gypsy music. Click the video bellow to hear one of their song and see some photos of gypsies:

If you like it, you still order their CDs from Amazon. Their music is not easy to find of you live in North America, they are a little known treasure, that only the connoisseurs know about.

In the Monday’s election, for the first time a candidate of the Quebec Solidaire party, Amir Khadir got elected. For those of you who are not familiar with Quebec politics, QS is a separatist (they want Quebec to be separated from Canada) political party with a leftist orientation. Click here to go to their English language pages, it took me some time to find them…

During the campaign they had the most ambitious promises for the middle and lover class citizens: environmental friendly policies, extending vacation, lowering taxes for the poor and increasing it for the rich, increase of minimum wage, welfare, investing in health-care that will be free, etc.

I was wondering why the left is appealing more to the younger voters, while the right is more likely to get votes from the older electorate?

It is also sad to see that leftist parties are making promises, proposing solutions to the more immediate needs of the poorer classes of society, while the right is more likely to appeal to those with a higher income.

In an ideal world, we would have a policy that won’t bring only immediate solutions to problems of the lower or higher classes of society, but would also commit to long therm solutions, that would put down a solid foundation to benefit the society for a long time.

Well, it’s another election, and just as the posters of different candidates in the federal elections are disappearing, we got the new ones, from PLQ, ADQ and PQ.

Going to the train station, every day I pass by a sign of the PQ candidate for the Acadie circumscription. It’s Marc-André Nolet, an accounting student at the Collège de Bois-de-Boulogne.

He has a vast and valuable work experience, like customer service at his school’s sport center, or guiding the parents during school visits and waiter at Coucoushee!!

I’m just wondering, was the PQ really serious about sending this guy as a candidate? Was he the most qualified among the PQ members for the Acadie circumscription to run? Should I vote for this guy and get him into the Parliament to vote for, or against laws? Will this candidate have the knowledge of how to propose a new law?

The same questions I ask when it comes to Mathieu Traversy in Terrebonne who did not finished his undergraduate studies, or even worst when it comes to Félix Sylvestre-Kentzinger who is running in Marguerite-Bourgeoys. Mr. Sylvestre-Kentzinger thought that having a high school diploma is less important than going to Quebec City to decide on the future of this beautiful province.

Same situation for Simon-Robert Chartrand in Mont-Royal circumscription (this guy has hardly any work experience), Jonathan Cyr in Chomedey, Gabrielle Dufour-Turcotte in Saint-Laurent (she’s still in high school), Catherine Major in Marquette, Mireille Mercier-Roy in Beauce-Nord and Guillaume Tremblay in Masson.

I didn’t had the time, but I’m sure that it’s the same situation with the other political parties too. They are under the impression, that people will see this as a sign of being open towards the younger generation. Sending kids that are still in school, or gave up school to run in elections is completely irresponsible.

Why our politicians are surprised to see that people don’t bother any more to go out and vote?

What is this? Are we in a high school political game, like elections 101? Let’s show them how it is to be a candidate, who cares if no one will vote for them?

If the PQ and any other political party has serious intentions to involve young people and send them as candidates, they should also make sure that these boys and girls are properly prepared.

First of all, they should all have at least an undergraduate degree, preferable a graduate degree. They should have an extensive work experience and political experience. There are plenty of tasks that a young person can do in political party that would prepare him to become a candidate one day.

Why send them now, when they have no teeth to bite? It’s unfair towards them and it’s unfair towards their electorate.

This is the first time I read a book written by Bowden and I found him to be a an excellent story teller. It was a book that I could hardly put down and once over it, I was wondering if I could find easily another book that will be just as entertaining as this one.

Although it’s a book about a historic event and although the book is filled with many details about the personal experience of the people that were involved, it’s as a non-fiction written most of the times at first person. It’s written from a very patriotic point of view, that makes it less credible and more suspicious of being biased. Throughout the book I couldn’t ignore the propaganda rhetoric of Bowden, he spent way to much time describing how some of the captives were finding ways to annoy their guards. Some of these passages were absolutely childish.

I still recommend it to anyone interested in the history of Iran and the Middle East in general.

Last night the American people have elected Barack Obama, an African American as their next president. As the results were coming in, I could hardly believe my eyes, virtue has won over skin color and reason has defeated religious bigotry.

TV channels were streaming images of people celebrating on the street, cars were honking and a CBC reporter who was in the front of the White House, has reported that a mob was approaching, but than it turned out that it was a group of students who took their celebration to the gates of the White House.

For the first time since 9/11/2001, I felt sympathy for America. At that time it was a horrible event, where many innocent civilians had lost their life or became disabled. That sympathy had evaporated thanks to the Bush type of cowboy foreign policy and internal monetary policy. The financial crisis we are all fighting now, all over the World, has a lot to do with Washington being occupied for the past eight years by a bunch of greedy people, who put their interest first, before the American people and before global political end economical stability.

At the early days of the campaign, I went trough the websites of all the candidates, there were many Republicans and even more Democrats. At the time I told my wife that the website of a black guy, certain Obama seemed to be interesting and I felt sorry for him that probably, he will be among the first to lose the race to the White House, because of his race…

He never stop surprising me, he raised from obscurity to become one of the front runners in the Democratic Primary elections. Than I thought, well he won’t have a chance against Hillary Clinton, who is part of the Washington establishment, she is well known and she’s a woman. I was sure that the faith of Obama is sealed, but again I was wrong, the American Democrats preferred to trust the skinny black guy and give him the task to defeat the Republicans.

Personally, John McCain did a great job during this campaign. He had to fight with several handicaps, his age, George W Bush and all the mess he managed to create and finally Sarah Palin. When the Republicans have announced that their candidate for the position of vice presidency is the Alaska Governor, they hoped that they will be able to grab the feminist votes, since Hillary was out. they hoped that they will appeal to the right wing of the GOP, by nominating a radical Christian, pro life, pro war, hunting hockey mom, who happens to be a former beauty queen.

Soon after she was presented, it became clear that their calculation has missed the target, very few feminist would vote for a woman that follows ideals that are completely opposed to feminism. Her radicalism has backfired too, since it did not took a long time for everyone to see that her deep faith in Christianity can’t excuse her from being ignorant about geopolitics. I hope she goes back to govern Alaska and we won’t hear anymore from her…

Last night I went to bed thinking that I love America, I love the ideal they stand for and they proved us that these ideals are not just some nice words, but they are achievable. Yes! You can!

I have the habit to go down every weekend to the video store and rent three movies, as the time passes it’s becoming a more and more difficult task, since there are less and less movies left that I’ve not seen or that I would spend time to watch.

This time after about 40 minutes of search I noticed something in the corner of the store, an intriguing cover, with a fantastic image. It reminded me somehow the Cirque de Soleil, the Fall by Tarsem. The title of the movie didn’t really caught me, it was more the director name and of course the cover that made me curios.

I won’t tell you here anything about what’s happening in the movie, but it’s a movie that is worth watching. The images are beautiful, just as the music (Beethoven Symphony no.7) and the whole story that is built around a little girl and a story teller.

I have mixed feelings after watching it, I think this is a movie that some people will love and others will find utterly anoying. I’m more in the category of those that find this movie unique, smart and inspiring.

Some trivia:

- the lead actor Lee Pace, has spent the first two month of the shooting in a wheelchair at the request of the director.

- Alexandria played by Catinca Untaru, the adorable little girl in the movie is Romanian and ever since she was three, she wanted to be an actress and receive flowers on stage.

- the movie was financed entirely by the director Tarsem Singh

I’m just wondering if i am the only one that misses having paper towels in a public washroom.

I seem to recall that the first time I used one of those “World Hand Dryers” I thought it was kind of neat but it sure took a long time to dry my hands.

World Dryer

Now they are everywhere and no public washrooms use paper towels anymore.

I liked being able to wash my hands then grab a paper towel on the way out and use it to turn the knob and push the washroom door open as I left.

I was able to completely dry my hands in the couple of seconds it took to walk to the door, and my hands always felt cleaner after drying them with a paper towel knowing that I might pick up some little germie friends turning the water off after washing them and maybe the paper towel would clean them off.

I find now I tend to just shake off some water on the wall or floor then wipe a few drips off on my pants as I back into the door opening it with my body with my hands in the air like a surgeon (always hoping that I don’t have to turn a knob to get out).

I know that operating a hand dryer is cheaper than paper towels and that paper towels need to be stocked and cleaned up and emptied occasionally but I think the overall hygiene has gone down the toilet of most public washrooms that have cheaped out with hand dryers especially when you have to turn a knob to open the door.

Just Thinkin.

I started listening recently to Carnatic music and I have to confess that it’s quite a surprise for me. In the West when Indian music is heard, it’s mostly Hindustani music and it’s very rare to hear Carnatic tunes. I’m slowly discovering with great joy this amazing musical system, I hope with time it will be better known to the western world, especially now that there are many Tamuls that are spread all over th world.
Browsing YouTube for Carnatic music, I stumbled upon Aruna Sairam, who I find, has a unique voice. I especially like the slight roughness in her voice, that makes the song sound more natural.

Here are two songs of her:
